What’s prayer got to do with it?

The short answer is…. plenty!

So, how was weight loss accomplished through prayer ?

Healing in Christian Science is not faith healing through the human mind or a blind faith. It’s not New Age thinking or positive thinking. It’s not visualization, seeing yourself the way you want to be.

It’s seeing yourself as God sees you, as God made you.

Evan Mehlenbacher, in his talk (see my previous blog post) said “God doesn’t see a glutton or someone burdened with genetic deficiencies or someone who can’t keep his hand out of a cookie jar or someone who has to have a piece of candy in his mouth all the time to be happy and satisfied.” Evan said he saw that “God’s image is not an unhealthy, unfit, overweight mortal. God’s image is a healthy, fit, immortal idea in the divine Mind.  It’s perfect, balanced, proportioned, wonderful.

Prayer is talking to God and listening to God. Prayer is understanding the divine. Prayer is the means by which we lift our thought spiritually so that it matches God’s thought and we understand better what God made and we see better what God sees as God sees it.

Mary Baker Eddy, who founded Christian Science, gives us this insight, “Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, page 476).

This method of healing is Christian because it follows Jesus’ example and sees man as God made him: perfect and good with good qualities like discipline, grace, balance, symmetry, beauty and health. It sees that God’s will for us is this goodness, this health.

This method of healing is scientific because it utilizes the spiritual laws of God in which God governs our being and keeps us perfect, in God’s likeness, always good, always healthy. And this law, or Science, brings out this condition – “balanced, proportioned, wonderful” – in the human system in a viable, reliable way. (If this seems at all unclear, I think you would enjoy reading  Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures).

If you’re like me, you’d probably like to hear Evan explain his weight loss experience again.  So, I invite you to hear it again for the very first time!
